Hair Color FAQs After years of coloring your hair at home or never having had color before, you've decided to have your color done at a salon. The most important first step is the consultation. This all-important session is more than just letting your color stylist know what shade you want it is about ensuring that you'll be happy with your new color. While color today is gentler that ever, it will affect you hair's texture. Your colorist should be up-front about possible damage and the conditioning steps you'll need to take to counteract it. Professionally recommended products are a must for color treated hair. Don't spare the expense, it will keep your hair color looking and feeling it's best. What is the difference between permanent and semi-permanent hair color? The primary difference is that semi-permanent hair color is a deposit only type of color and will only darken or add vibrancy to your own natural tone. The maintenance factors with semi or often referred to as demi permanent color is that it typically fades out gradually. If you choose to repeat the service you may do so otherwise it will simply wash away with time. The more frequent you wash the quicker it will fade away. The benefit of the semi/demi colors is that they give the hair luster, shine and manageability. It also gives you the client the chance to see or experience with haircoloring or new colors without a long-term commitment. The opposite is true with permanent hair color. A developer is used in the formula to set the color. It requires maintenance, about 4-6 weeks depending on the rate of hair growth, number of washings and the products used to maintain your hair. How will I know what type or process of hair color will work best for me? This where, a professional consultation is crucial. The first place to start is to do some homework. So, be patient and remember that there's no magic involved, just a great colorist doing the best they can with what they have to work with. A through consultation is the first order of business.
