How often should I get my hair cut or trimmed?
Hair in general grows between 1/2-inch to 1-inch a month. Shorter Cuts tend to need more maintenance, particularly around the edges. Most shapes will hold up for approximately 4-6 weeks. Thicker, wavy, and coarse hair textures can stretch to about 8 to 10 weeks.
I am interested in getting a new look. How will I know what I want and what will look good on me?
First of all you'll need to do some research. Go through some of your favorite magazines and cut out pictures of the styles that appeal most to you. Begin to take notice of hairstyles that you see on the street. Make a mental note of what you liked and disliked about the cut, color and texture. Once you have done your research make an appointment for a complimentary consultation. Take all your data and communicate in words and with pictures the style or styles that appeal most to you. Your stylist will do the rest. Their professional analysis of your lifestyle, hair texture, facial shape, maintenance requirements, etc. will determine the best look for you. So together with your expectations and the stylist's expertise a hairstyle will be crafted that best suit your individuality.
I am starting to see gray, should I color my hair?
This is such a personal decision and should be well thought out, and discussed with your stylist. The cost involved and the maintenance, every 3-4 weeks, is the first consideration. The second is, are you coloring for an event or special occasion, or do you want to conceal your gray for a much longer period of time. There are several ways your stylist can blend gray or minimize gray patches for a short period of time, but once you choose permanent hair color, remember that hair grows on the average 1/2 inch per month, are you willing to have partially colored hair for length of time it will take to grow the color out.
My hair always tangles after I shower. What do I do?
Begin by brushing your hair out before you wash, if the tangles are there when the hair is dry, they will be there when the hair is wet. You might want to start using a light rinse conditioner, like the Rosemary Mint Equalizer or Sap Moss Detangler. After shampooing apply the conditioner and comb the product through your hair from scalp to ends, rinse, and then gently squeeze the water from your hair, do not wring or twist your hair as this will cause the hair to tangle. Another important suggestion is do not wrap your hair up turban style in a towel for an extended amount of time, no more that 2 minutes, this will also cause tangles.
We also suggest Aveda's Spray on, Leave on Brilliant Damage Control or Styling Curressence. These two products are ideal for combing or brushing out tangles. They are easy to use and require no rinsing. Begin by gently towel drying your hair, do not rub or add friction to the hair. After spraying the product into the hair begin to brush or comb the hair starting at the ends and working your way up to the scalp. The right hair product is crucial here, tangles can cause more than tears, they can damage the hair, and cause split ends and breakage, so be careful.
